If you look at any of the older homes in the area, homes that were built before 1900's, Chances are you will find lilacs. lilac plants are found in many of the historic homes some dating back to the 1700's in our area.Lilacs were planted around the windows of many of these homes.
What a wonderful idea ! Can you imagine the joy this must have given these early residents. After a harsh winter, to finally be able to open a window of an early cottage, and greeted by such a wonderful aroma!Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew lilac transplants and planted them on their property. I can also visualize the large vases of overflowing lilacs that must have graced the parlors in many of the large victorian homes later in the 19th century.
